Spring News from the Farm

With light levels and temperatures on the rise it really feels like spring is here. We have big plans for this year's growing season with more members and more crops in the ground than ever.

We’ve been as busy as ever over the winter preparing for the new growing season.

Grower Ryan has just brought large numbers of seedlings up to the farm, and there’s lots of planting out going on.

Spring veg boxes
Our spring veg boxes are full of nutritious greens such as pak choi and purple sprouting broccoli, with some delicious salad leaves and broccolo fiolaro for good measure. We’re still enjoying the last of the winter squash too, just as the spring greens have started cropping. Eating the rainbow at this time of year is fantastic for well being.
We’re looking forward green garlic, spring onions and sugar snap peas in the next couple of months.

Flower gardens in great shape ready for this season

We’ve been doing a lot of work in our flower gardens over the winter, with mulching, woodchipping, hedge trimming, weeding and now the first flower plantings of the year underway. They are looking better then ever so we’re hopeful of bounteous flower beds this summer full of colour just like the picture opposite shows from last year!
Watch this space for details of bouquets, flower evenings and other events in the flower gardens, that will be available once the flower season begins!

The Oak Tree will be hosting more visits from the Grow Cook Eat kids holiday club workshops this season. Grow Cook Eat will be running two workshops over the Easter holidays incorporating gardening, food preparation, nature based activities and outdoor fun 10am-3pm. The dates are Monday 7 April and Tuesday 8 April. For further information and to book onto a workshop click the link: https://eequ.org/book/grow-cook-eat-with-grow-cook-eat-9705

Community building construction begins
Our big infrastructure project for this year is our community building that will improve conditions for our harvesting team as well as better facilities for our members, volunteers and visiting groups. It will replace the rather weather-beaten marquee that has served us well but won’t make it through another winter! Last weekend our volunteer construction team installed the first uprights for the structure and we’re hoping to have the building completed by the summer, possibly incorporating an off grid solar power system to add to what we’re able to do on site. Exciting times!

Finally, don’t forget you can keep up to date with what’s happening on the farm by following us on Instagram and Facebook.

We’re all enjoying the spring sunshine, hope you are too!
